Job Overview

The Brigham and Women's Hospital is seeking a skilled Surgical ICU Physician Assistant to join our team in the Med-Surg ICU. This role will provide high-quality patient care, work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

About the Role

This position requires a strong clinical background in medicine and surgery, with experience in critical care. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks efficiently, and demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills. As a member of the ICU team, you will be responsible for performing patient admitting histories and physicals, conducting bedside procedures, and assisting in the development of treatment plans. You will also participate in education and training programs for students and healthcare personnel, as well as engage in quality improvement and research efforts.

Responsibilities

• Perform patient admitting histories and physicals, recording information accurately in patient records
• Conduct bedside procedures, such as inserting lines and tubes, and perform postoperative wound care and removal of tubes, lines, and sutures
• Evaluate patients and assist in developing treatment plans with attending intensivists
• Respond to emergency situations, manage patient issues, and obtain consultations as necessary
• Provide age-specific care to medical/surgical intensive care patients from early adolescence through the geriatric ages
• Work under the direction of supervising critical care attendings
• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and research efforts as directed by service leadership
• Initiate quality improvement, patient safety, and research efforts as appropriate
• Assist in orientation and training of new hires, support other team members' performance and development, and mentor students when applicable
• Maintain accurate, thorough, and compliant documentation to support proper reimbursement of encounters and procedures
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality patient care and achieve shared goals
• Stay up-to-date on the latest literature in surgical critical care practice

Requirements

• Graduate-level accredited Physician Assistant Program approved by AMA Board of Approval and Certification of PA programs
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent (BS/MS joint programs are acceptable)
• NCCPA certification
• License as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts
• Maintain current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses
• Complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each 2-year period of employment
• Complete BWH Professionalism Program within 3 months of date of hire
• FCCS certificate preferred
• Previous experience in an academic surgical/medical environment strongly preferred
• Previous experience inpatient medicine/surgery and/or critical care preferred
• Excellent patient-care skills, strong competency for evaluation and treatment of critically ill patients, ability to learn and perform technical procedures, and knowledge of medicine, surgery, and critical care
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize tasks efficiently, and demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills
• Commitment to quality care, ethical judgment, and patient privacy
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties appropriately
• Understanding of procedures, policies, and documentation required to ensure compliance with standards of care

Working Conditions

This role will involve exposure to potentially infectious material and the use of needles and other sharp instruments. The working conditions require the ability to alternate scheduled shifts for patient care in the BWH mixed ICU, including nights, weekends, and holidays. PAs' responsibilities may be physically demanding and may require shifts exceeding 12 hours. Hours per shift and shifts per week may vary week-to-week.

Estimated Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year, based on location and experience.
