Position Overview:
This role involves overseeing the daily functions of the Aquaponics and Hydroponics Laboratory, ensuring effective management of aquatic life, conducting water quality assessments, and facilitating student research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer care for aquatic species within the laboratory, including feeding, health assessments, and general upkeep.
- Perform routine water quality evaluations to maintain optimal conditions for both fish and plant development, implementing management strategies for fish health.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of hydroponic and aquaponic systems, ensuring proper nutrient delivery, water filtration, and aeration processes.
- Supervise and provide foundational training for student assistants.
- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator to guide student researchers in their projects, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and ethical standards in data collection and analysis.
- Engage with community members, educators, and K-14 students interested in sustainable food production by organizing educational workshops, seminars, and demonstrations on aquaponics and hydroponics.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in aquaculture, fisheries, hydroponics, or a related discipline, along with two years of relevant laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with four years of relevant laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Skills:
Demonstrated expertise in aquaponics and hydroponics systems, including fish stock management and water quality analysis. Experience in laboratory supervision, a passion for sustainable agriculture, and proficiency in data analysis and report writing are highly desirable.
