Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Patient Care Services, the Lactation Consultant plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive lactation management services to expectant and new parents. This position is dedicated to providing educational breastfeeding sessions for mothers and ensuring the availability of breastfeeding-related equipment for retail or rental.

Core Responsibilities
  • Lactation Management: Provide expert lactation management services to all in-patient breastfeeding patients, fostering an environment conducive to learning for both hospital staff and patients.
  • Bedside Consultations: Conduct daily bedside lactation rounds, addressing breastfeeding challenges faced by mothers.
  • Collaboration: Engage in communication and decision-making processes related to obstetrical services.
  • Equipment Oversight: Select and manage breastfeeding-related supplies for retail and rental, including breast pump rentals.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement quality assurance programs to evaluate the effectiveness of lactation services, maintaining accurate records and reports for the Director.
  • Outpatient Services: Extend lactation management services to outpatient breastfeeding mothers, planning and organizing relevant activities.
  • Resource Provision: Serve as a knowledgeable resource for hospital staff on breastfeeding topics and issues.
Professional Development

To maintain personal competence and enhance departmental effectiveness, the Lactation Consultant will:

  • Participate in community outreach and educational initiatives as needed.
  • Complete additional job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Organizational Compliance

The Lactation Consultant is expected to adhere to the following organizational standards:

  • Attend department meetings and stay informed on shared information.
  • Fulfill mandatory education and annual competencies within designated timeframes.
  • Maintain a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Utilize appropriate safety precautions and adhere to regulatory requirements.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A valid RN license and a minimum of two years of clinical experience in mother/child nursing.
  • Current professional certification as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or the commitment to obtain it within two years of hire.
  • In-depth knowledge of lactation principles and the ability to effectively teach breastfeeding skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse clients and healthcare providers.
Working Environment

This position requires physical stamina and the ability to adapt to various patient care settings, including exposure to bio-hazards.
