Purpose Statement:
The role of the Educational Support Specialist is designed to assist in the instructional framework within designated classrooms, focusing on providing support to individual students and small groups, while also offering clerical assistance to educators and staff.
Essential Functions:
- Modifies classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the guidance of the supervising educator to support and reinforce educational objectives.
- Administers classroom tasks, assessments, and homework for the purpose of aiding teachers in the educational process.
- Assists students, both individually and in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students read, providing writing support, reinforcing English lessons, facilitating activities, and utilizing computer learning programs) to enhance learning concepts and help students achieve academic goals.
- Participates in meetings and training sessions to acquire and convey information relevant to job responsibilities.
- Communicates with educators and parents to assist in evaluating student progress.
- Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the assigned educator to present and reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintains both manual and electronic records for the purpose of providing written reference and historical documentation in accordance with established guidelines.
- Monitors individual and groups of students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs general clerical tasks (e.g., copying, filing, data entry) to support the classroom's instructional program.
- Reports observations and incidents related to specific students (e.g., accidents, inappropriate behavior, safety conditions) to communicate important information to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured student) to address immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Supports classroom educators and other school staff in implementing curriculum and teaching methodologies.
Other Functions:
- Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
SKILLS are necessary to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to enhance skills to meet evolving job conditions. Specific competencies required include operating standard office equipment and using relevant software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and applying curriculum and instructional techniques.
KNOWLEDGE is essential for performing basic math, reading various manuals, writing documents following prescribed formats, and understanding complex instructions. Specific knowledge competencies required include grammar and punctuation concepts, stages of child development, and age-appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, collate data, and utilize basic job-related equipment. Flexibility is necessary to collaborate with others in diverse circumstances and operate equipment using standardized methods. The ability to work with a wide range of individuals and data is also essential, along with problem-solving skills to identify issues and create action plans.
Working Environment:
The typical methods of performing the job's functions require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, along with some stooping, kneeling, and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is generally performed with a mix of sitting, walking, and standing. There may be some exposure to risks of injury and/or illness.
