As a Recovery Advocate, you will use your lived experience in mental health recovery to assist other adults in their mental health/wellness recovery journey. Your role will involve addressing the needs of our peers and supporting them in finding the resources, knowledge, and skills needed to make healthier choices toward recovery. You will also advocate and serve as a role model, assist with linking peers to concrete community services, and promote the value of self-help, peer support, and personal empowerment to foster recovery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing active listening skills to assist peers in recognizing areas of dissatisfaction and the benefits of changing beliefs, thoughts, and behavior.
  • Utilizing problem-solving skills to assist peers to identify barriers to recovery and to develop a plan to meet peer-determined goals.
  • Working with a team to advocate for peers and to remove barriers to recovery.
  • Communicating positively to a wide variety of people, including AAMHC members and staff, mental health professionals, other advocacy organizations, and our community.
  • Maintaining healthy boundaries with peers, co-workers, and community.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Responding to the issues and needs of people in crisis and observing rules of ethics and confidentiality.
  • Planning, prioritizing, and organizing workload to complete job assignments in a timely manner.

Requirements include:

  • Self-identified as having direct personal experience living with mental illness and recovery.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • CPS (Certified Peer Specialist) certification/MHPS (Mental Health Peer Specialist).
  • At least one (1) year of experience working on your personal recovery and able to manage your own wellness.
  • Agree to disclose your own mental illness diagnosis for the purpose of educating, role modeling, and providing hope to others about the reality of recovery.
  • Be able to travel as needed.
  • Must have adequate mobility that requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (vertical and horizontal), using fingers, hands, feet, legs, and torso in various care.
  • Must be able to seldomly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Having completed, or can complete, training (WRAP, Peer Facilitator, or training/experience in mental health field).
