Job Overview

Under the guidance of supervisory personnel, this role is essential in managing the preparation and distribution of laboratory tests across various specialized departments within the University of Maryland Medical System, adhering to established protocols and regulations set forth by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.

Key Responsibilities

1. Accessioning Patient Samples: Accurately receives and logs patient samples into the Laboratory Information System, ensuring timely and precise entry of all relevant codes and information.

2. Patient Identification: Maintains accurate patient records and information for billing, following departmental guidelines.

3. Specimen Processing: Conducts essential procedures such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and other specialized handling of specimens, delivering them to designated laboratories as required. Preserves specimens appropriately in various storage conditions, including refrigeration and freezing.

4. Quality Assurance: Identifies and addresses issues related to specimen integrity, such as mislabeling or insufficient quantity, documenting all findings for quality assurance.

5. Testing Procedures: Processes add-on testing in accordance with departmental protocols and may perform testing of waived to moderate complexity.

6. Customer Service: Responds to inquiries and requests from customers, providing assistance as needed.
