Position Overview
The Financial Assistance Coordinator plays a crucial role within the Financial Aid team at the College. Reporting directly to the Manager of Financial Aid Operations, this position is responsible for managing the intake process for students seeking financial aid guidance. The Coordinator provides expert support to front counter staff, ensuring that students receive comprehensive assistance regarding financial aid inquiries, thereby delivering exceptional customer service.

Collaboration and Communication
This role involves working closely with various departments, including the Student Tuition Services Office, Office of Records and Registration, and the Office of the Dean of Students, to investigate and resolve issues related to financial aid payments, bookstore credits, and holds that may impact student assistance. The Financial Assistance Coordinator also counsels students and their families on financial aid options, evaluates and verifies financial aid applications, and represents the College at both on-campus and external events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise prospective and current students, as well as their families, on the financial aid application process and eligibility for federal and state assistance, including support with completing the FAFSA.
  • Assist students in securing federal and private loans, scholarships, and understanding institutional payment plans while addressing any issues with rejected aid applications.
  • Communicate effectively with students and families through various channels to provide updates on eligibility and to request necessary documentation.
  • Manage documentation received from students using the document management system; create and maintain files for new and returning students, ensuring proper organization and merging of duplicate records.
  • Update student financial aid information in the system, ensuring accurate loan amounts are processed and coordinating with the Student Loan Program.
  • Verify data on the Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) against federal tax return information.
  • Collaborate with external offices to resolve financial aid payment issues identified by relevant departments.
  • Address holds from the Student Tuition Services Office and provide explanations to students regarding resolutions.
  • Work alongside advisors and counselors to assist students facing academic challenges and coordinate with Records and Registration to resolve enrollment status concerns.
  • Conduct workshops and presentations aimed at educating students about financial aid options.
  • Generate and reconcile financial aid reports as needed.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree is required from an accredited institution.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial aid regulations is necessary.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in administrative decisions.
  • Excellent customer service and teamwork skills are required.
  • Commitment to the mission of an urban community college is essential.
  • Ability to foster a positive work environment and model exceptional service.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines is necessary.
  • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, and Internet applications; experience with Ellucian Banner is a plus.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in financial aid is preferred.
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment is advantageous.
