Job Summary

The Financial Aid Specialist is a key member of the Financial Aid team, responsible for providing expert guidance and support to students and families navigating the financial aid process. This role requires a strong understanding of financial aid regulations and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Counsel students and families on financial aid eligibility and application processes, ensuring accurate and timely completion of FAFSA applications.
  • Assist students in applying for federal and private loans, scholarships, and institutional payment plans, resolving rejected aid applications and communicating with students and families via multiple channels.
  • Track and manage documentation, creating files for new and continuing students, and merging duplicate files as needed.
  • Update student aid in Banner, adding student loans to aid packages, and corresponding with the Student Loan Program to ensure accurate funding.
  • Verify information on the Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) and compare with student or parent Federal tax returns.
  • Collaborate with outside offices to research and resolve financial aid payment problems, including those identified by Student Tuition Services and Office of Student Records and Registration.
  • Resolve Student Tuition Services Office holds and explain resolution to students.
  • Work with advisors and counselors to make recommendations to students who were dropped for poor scholarship, and correspond with Records and Registration to resolve enrollment status issues.
  • Conduct workshops and presentations for new and continuing students, generating and reconciling reports as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required, with any and all degrees from a recognized institutional accreditor.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated knowledge of financial aid regulations.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and ability to use independent judgment in making administrative decisions.
  • Strong customer service and collaboration skills, with a commitment to the mission of an urban community college.
  • Ability to foster a positive and productive work environment, with the ability to lead and motivate staff and model exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude towards daily challenges and process high volumes of work with accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, with proficiency in MS Word and Excel, and Internet applications.
  • Access to reliable transportation required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of financial aid work experience preferred.
  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment is preferred.
