Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) PRN role at Houston Methodist is a vital position within our healthcare team, requiring a licensed and experienced clinician who operates at the Competent to Proficient level as defined by Benner's model of clinical practice. This role is essential in delivering professional nursing care to a diverse array of patients, performing nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, providing patient education, and ensuring the meticulous maintenance of medical records.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver direct patient care efficiently and effectively, catering to patients with a variety of complex needs.
- Engage in effective communication and collaboration with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure the delivery of compassionate and high-quality care.
- Demonstrate clinical proficiency in administering medications, executing procedures, and managing emergencies, while advocating for patient and family rights.
- Assume leadership responsibilities, which may include serving as a charge nurse or preceptor, and actively participate in unit governance initiatives.
Essential Functions
- People-Centric Care: Utilize therapeutic communication to build relationships with patients and families, fostering collaboration on care plans.
- Team Collaboration: Contribute to a positive work environment by assisting colleagues and responding to requests for help, enhancing teamwork.

- Develop and communicate comprehensive care plans in partnership with patients and the healthcare team, prioritizing care based on individual needs.
- Provide effective patient education, adapting teaching methods to ensure understanding and retention of information.
Quality and Safety:
- Follow established standards of care related to nursing practices, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities for practice improvement based on evidence-based research to enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse in a healthcare setting.
- Current Texas State Licensure as a Registered Nurse or Temporary Licensure, along with Basic Life Support certification.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficient in clinical skills and competencies necessary for safe practice.
- Strong communication abilities, with a focus on customer service and positive interactions.
- Effective organizational and problem-solving skills, capable of managing multiple tasks.
Work Environment
- Uniform: Scrubs required.
- On-Call: May be required during emergencies.
