State of Oregon –
This role is a limited duration opportunity expected to last for a year, with the possibility of extension or reduction based on operational requirements. This on-call position involves filling in for absences and covering shifts as necessary. Compensation is based on full-time employment, with salary varying according to hours worked. Internal candidates may be considered for job rotation with prior approval from their current supervisor.
About the Role – Your Responsibilities
The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is in search of Registered Nurses who are dedicated to providing care for marginalized and underserved populations within correctional facilities. The patient demographic served by ODOC often faces significant mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and various socioeconomic pressures, making the role of nursing staff essential in delivering evidence-based care to meet these needs. We are looking for skilled, compassionate, and driven Registered Nurses to offer patient-centered health care services, comprehensive health education, and act as advocates for our patients.
Your primary duties will include delivering health care services to individuals residing in ODOC facilities. Key responsibilities encompass:
- Direct Patient Care: Deliver nursing care that includes patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, care planning, medication administration, laboratory and medical procedures, and treatment delivery in accordance with ODOC policies, procedures, protocols, provider orders, and evidence-based care standards.
- Care Coordination: Organize patient health care by scheduling on-site services and community-based resources to ensure optimal health outcomes.
- Effective Communication: Provide thorough patient education and serve as a resource for non-medical personnel regarding health care delivery in a correctional context. Advocate for patient needs to ensure timely care and address any challenges posed by the correctional environment.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate, clear, and complete records of patient care. Document all medical requests, objective data collected during care, treatments administered, evaluations of treatment effectiveness, and patient education provided.
- Administrative Duties: Coordinate nursing activities with services from other departments. Assume responsibility for unit operations in the absence of management. Monitor and evaluate medical supplies to ensure adequate availability and secure storage, including maintaining accurate counts of narcotics and other medical supplies.
This position is represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). It may qualify for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by law.
Benefits Offered:
Employees of the Department of Corrections receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance coverage through the Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB), along with retirement benefits through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Paid vacation and sick leave are accrued monthly, and salary increases are awarded in accordance with the applicable labor agreement.

- 5% for bilingual proficiency
- 4.75% for holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- 9.5% for holding a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
- 5% for Lead Worker responsibilities
- Additional compensation for swing, night, and weekend shifts
