Job Title: IRP-Medical ASL Interpreter

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Sign Language Interpreter to join our team at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. As a Medical Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients receive high-quality healthcare services by providing accurate and effective communication between patients and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical sign language interpretation services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients in a variety of healthcare settings, including inpatient and outpatient clinics, operating rooms, and emergency departments.
  • Interpret medical information, including diagnoses, treatments, and medications, to ensure that patients understand their healthcare needs and can make informed decisions about their care.
  • Work closely with healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive culturally competent care and that their communication needs are met.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure that communication needs are met and that patients receive high-quality care.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current on medical terminology, sign language, and cultural competency.

Requirements:

  • 2-4 year degree in language interpreting or linguistic degree and/or degree in a clinical field.
  • Completion of 40-hour medical interpreter training program along with passing score on examination post-offer.
  • Internship and progress toward national certification exam within a year of employment for medical interpreters.
  • Successful completion of a language proficiency test over the following: code of ethics, standard practices, and medical terminology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of experience as a medical sign language interpreter.
  • National certification as a medical interpreter.
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting.
