Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Family Shelter Advocate to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will work closely with families and children in need, providing support and guidance to help them overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guest Relations (35%)
  • Create a welcoming environment for families and engage them in high-quality shelter services
  • Assist guests in conversations around their housing goals and provide resource navigation
  • Maintain a calm demeanor and model positive behavior, upholding professional boundaries
  • Address behavioral challenges and provide trauma-informed crisis management and conflict de-escalation
  • Collaborate with other staff members to ensure consistency and effective service delivery
  • Welcome and orient new families to the shelter, providing tours and completing intake documents
  • Implementation of Shelter Operations & Procedures (35%)
  • Execute shelter processes according to time of day and in accordance with the Shelter Policy Manual
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary shelter environment, including disinfecting high-touch areas and restocking supplies
  • Serve food and adhere to all food safety and serving protocols, documenting clear and consistent information
  • Move around the facility and maintain an active presence, engaging with guests
  • Record and report any building or facility concerns
  • Attend required trainings and monthly staff meetings
  • Implementation of Guest Enrichment Programming (15%)
  • Facilitate calendar of activities and events for guests' benefit, providing feedback on effectiveness and suggesting improvements
  • Welcome and engage volunteers in shelter activities, helping them become familiar with their roles
  • Data Entry and Information Management (15%)
  • Autor, upload, and maintain clear, objective, and accurate electronic guest records, reports, and shelter documentation
  • Handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
  • Maintain up-to-date community resources provided by other program teams, making them easily accessible to guests

Requirements and Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Two or more years of work or volunteer experience in social services, or one or more years of social services experience combined with customer service experience
  • Experience working in a shelter setting or with people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity is highly preferred
  • Possession of creative problem-solving, conflict de-escalation, and crisis management skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care
  • Ability to set boundaries and maintain a professional demeanor in a high-stress environment
  • Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs of clients experiencing homelessness, low-income, limited English speaking, or impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse, or other barriers to employment and housing
  • Ability to proficiently speak, read, write, and understand English; proficiency in another language is preferred
  • Reliable commute to at least two of the three Mary's Place 24/7 shelter locations
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends in response to clients' needs

Compensation and Benefits

We offer:

  • $25.00 per hour DOE
  • Unlimited use ORCA pass with small deduction per pay period
  • Sick Time in accordance with Seattle Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance
  • PTO accruals starting at 40 hours/year for part-time staff
  • 403(b) plan with 50% employer match on first 6% employee contribution
