The Mortgage Underwriter plays a critical role in evaluating residential loan applications to ensure adherence to company policies, investor standards, and regulatory requirements. This position involves a thorough examination of loan documentation for precision and completeness, focusing on various mortgage lending types, particularly conventional loans. The Underwriter collaborates closely with Loan Originators, Branch Managers, and Processors to gather all necessary documentation.
This role is primarily office-based, allowing for remote work one day a week, subject to management approval.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of either DE or SAR designation is mandatory for this role.
- Evaluate loan applications to confirm completeness, accuracy, and compliance with guidelines.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of multiple loan product guidelines, DU/LP standards, and risk assessment methodologies.
- Adhere to Novus Home Mortgage's established policies and procedures.
- Adjust loan terms as necessary and identify additional conditions to support sound credit decisions.
- Assess borrower profiles, including income documentation, tax returns, credit reports, and appraisals.
- Analyze income documentation and ensure all required paperwork is collected to substantiate final loan decisions.
- Ensure compliance with the Ability to Repay (ATR) regulations set by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
- Exercise sound judgment and conduct thorough reasonableness tests to make informed decisions.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of loan files, ensuring consistent processes.
- Meet pre-established service level standards for decision-making within the company's timeframes.
- Engage in regular communication with the sales team, processors, and management.
- Consistently achieve or surpass minimum productivity and quality benchmarks set by management.
- Respond promptly to audits of loan files that were underwritten prior to funding.
- Review all submitted documentation for compliance with product and investor guidelines, borrower validation, ATR, and risk mitigation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- A minimum of two years of current experience in frontline mortgage underwriting is essential; DE or SAR designation is required.
- Skills in appraisal review and tax return analysis are necessary.
- Prior credit signing authority is advantageous.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities are essential.
- Attention to detail and the capacity to manage a high volume of work are crucial.
- Proficiency in computer systems, particularly in LOS systems like Encompass.
- Ability to deliver effective results and meet deadlines with minimal oversight.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
