Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct a diverse range of tests, procedures, and assessments using methodologies from multiple specialty domains within the clinical laboratory.
  • Perform gram staining and microscopic evaluations of bodily fluids, sputum, and other intricate clinical samples.
  • Oversee and manage human blood products for transfusions, particularly in critical patient care scenarios.
  • Execute quality control assessments, calibrations, verifications, and evaluations to ensure diagnostic instruments operate within set parameters.
  • Maintain precise records using designated charts to confirm all quality control outcomes align with established control limits before releasing patient results.
Employment Conditions

  • Appointment may require a suitability or fitness assessment based on a completed background investigation.
  • This role is designated as a Testing Designated Position, necessitating pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Candidates will need to consent to participate in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Selected candidates may be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or provide a recognized exemption.
  • Must achieve and sustain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certifications (e.g., ALS) do not replace BLS.
  • This position may necessitate on-call duties during irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying schedules.
  • Designated as Inclement Weather Essential; the incumbent must strive to report for work punctually and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting, up to 40 pounds, is a requirement.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is mandatory.
  • Child Care Background Check Required: National agency check with written inquiries (NACI) and state and criminal history repository (SCHR) checks will be necessary as a condition of employment.
  • A pre-placement medical examination may be necessary.
  • Immunization screening is required; Hepatitis B immunization is mandatory for all roles involving direct patient interaction. Applicants may need to provide proof of other immunizations based on the position type.
Qualifications

Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens

To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and/or experiential requirements outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Credit will be granted for all qualifying experience, including volunteer roles. Resumes must clearly outline relevant experience; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of the application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that includes executing complex testing in a clinical laboratory environment; operating or maintaining equipment; and performing quality control procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be utilized to qualify for this position, provided the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
