Residential Driver

The City of Starkville is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Residential Driver to join our Sanitation Division team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating a large commercial garbage truck and assisting with the removal and disposal of residential and commercial refuse.
Key Responsibilities- Operate a refuse collection truck in a safe and legal manner on an assigned route, supervising and instructing crew members in proper collection procedures.
- Inspect the refuse truck daily to ensure it is properly equipped, cleaned, and serviced, performing minor maintenance as needed.
- Report violations of solid waste collection regulations to the supervisor.
- Deal with citizens encountered on the route in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
- Complete all scheduled garbage routes and make special pickups as scheduled.
- Ensure proper safety precautions have been taken, setting out traffic cones, putting out barricades, and flagging traffic.
- Require regular and prompt attendance and the ability to work well with others and as a team.
- Wash and grease the truck and packer, assist the leaf collection crew, and work additional routes as needed.
- High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
- Experience in driving a heavy-duty truck.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B.
Work is performed outside in adverse weather conditions, exposing the employee to wetness, gases, sharp objects, and unsanitary conditions. Work involves operating a refuse truck, exposing the employee occasionally to potential biological and chemical hazards from household garbage, and occasionally to inclement weather. Work also exposes the employee daily to traffic hazards and to potential mechanical hazards. Work requires the employee to be alert at all times. Protective equipment is required, such as gloves, safety glasses, boots, hard hats, orange vests, and traffic flags.
Work requires the physical ability to lift heavy objects for sustained periods of time, stand or sit for extended periods in confined spaces, and frequent lifting. The work also requires physical dexterity in the extensive use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs, and body in the operation of a refuse truck. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
