Job Summary

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) seeks a highly skilled and compassionate Director of Counseling and Wellbeing to oversee the mental health and personal development needs of our student body. Reporting to the Dean of Students, this critical administrative role requires strategic leadership, clinical expertise, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership and Administration:
    • Develop and implement campus-wide mental wellbeing initiatives, contributing to the strategic planning of the University.
    • Analyze data on student mental health trends, utilization rates, and outcomes to allocate resources effectively and tailor services to student needs.
    • Direct and administer programs and services of the counseling department, maintaining current knowledge and application of ethics, laws, and regulations governing mental health practices.
    • Develop an annual departmental budget and monitor expenditures, providing administrative oversight and supervision to the counselor team.
    • Develop, revise, and implement clinical service delivery and emergency protocols.
  • Campus Engagement and Collaboration:
    • Maintain involvement and engagement of the counseling department with campus partners to ensure a community-level approach to campus mental wellbeing.
    • Consult with parents, medical and mental health professionals, Student Services staff, faculty, and other staff about student mental health and psychological functioning.
    • Partner with Student Services staff to advise and structure withdrawals and academic adjustments for students impacted by mental health issues.
    • Participate as a consultant on committees reviewing students of concern or students returning from medical leaves of absence.
    • Serve on the campus life leadership team, collaborating with colleagues.
    • Provide training and programming to student leaders, campus partners, faculty, and other constituents to promote student safety, wellbeing, and personal and professional development.
    • Guide overall programming and outreach efforts of the counseling department.
    • Provide advising/consultation to student organizations aligned with the mission of the counseling department, supporting student leadership development while promoting mental health across campus.
  • Clinical Counseling and Crisis Response:
    • Provide psychological counseling, adhering to appropriate clinical documentation practices, and maintaining a consistent client load.
    • Serve as the mental health contact person for the Housing Director, on-call for consultation during mental health crises beyond their scope of response.
    • Culturally competent, sensitive to issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and other identities.
    • Lead initiatives that promote mental well-being, reduce stigma, and create a supportive campus environment.
    • Remain familiar with technology for counseling and outreach.
    • Adhere to appropriate professional standards of conduct and ethics, including confidentiality, integrity, and honesty.
Requirements
  • A doctoral degree in counseling psychology or clinical psychology.
  • 5 years experience as an independently licensed therapist within a clinical setting (or at least 3 years as an independently licensed therapist).
  • Comprehensive training in historical and intergenerational trauma, as well as trauma-informed and culturally responsive care, especially working with Indigenous and BIPOC communities.
  • Comprehensive training working with LGBTQ2S+ clients and communities.
  • Operates from a holistic framework, honoring mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health and wellbeing.
  • Five years of counseling experience within a counseling agency setting, with a strong preference for candidates who have held positions within a college counseling center, demonstrating increasing administrative responsibilities.
  • License to practice independently as a psychologist, counselor, or clinical social worker.
  • Knowledge of ethics, laws, and regulations governing mental health practices.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision and oversight.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in mental health practice.
  • Capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and engage with diverse campus stakeholders.
Working Conditions
  • Duties are performed on campus.
  • Duties require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, and talking.
  • Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and other events using personal or company vehicle.
  • Ability and flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours, in order to meet departmental and institutional support needs and deadlines.
  • May be instructed to perform additional duties as needed.
