Position Overview:

This role is a full-time midnight shift position at the Wayne Campus.


General Summary:
Under general supervision, you will conduct and report routine or specialized clinical laboratory tests and procedures across various sections of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:


Perform selected chemical, hematologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic, and/or microbiologic procedures using both manual techniques and advanced laboratory instruments.

Utilize your training and clinical expertise to assess instrument performance and quality control results, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of analytical data prior to release; identify and escalate implausible results or unique circumstances to a medical technologist or supervisor.

Maintain, calibrate, and operate laboratory equipment, performing preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting as necessary.
Assist in collecting data for the evaluation and introduction of new instruments or procedures.

Engage in the training of students, residents, and new staff in the execution of routine procedures; participate in departmental continuing education and in-service training.

Contribute to various quality assurance and regulatory activities within the department, including data collection for quality assurance monitoring, adherence to safe work practices, and participation in TQM/CQI committees.


Involvement in:
Quality improvement initiatives, data collection, quality control documentation, and/or CAP surveys relevant to the assigned department.
Participate in staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).

Support the Friend-at-Work program and assist in training new hires as assigned.
Participate in staff and committee meetings as required.
Cost Efficiency:
Demonstrate efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and promptly.

Be mindful of the appropriate use of laboratory resources through purchase requests and minimize waste of supplies.

Perform additional duties as assigned, including inventory control, reagent preparation, specimen processing, distribution, and storage tasks.

Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:Education / Training:


A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, including 16 semester hours in biology (with one semester in microbiology) and 16 semester hours in chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry).

Completion of a clinical laboratory program accredited by NAACLS or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

Proof of completion of a clinical internship (e.g., NAACLS accredited program).


Work Experience:
Completion of a NAACLS accredited clinical internship or equivalent experience/training as mandated by the ASCP Board of Certification or other recognized certifying agency/work experience approved by Lab Administration.

Certification, Licensure, Registration:
Department policy necessitates U.S. certification, U.S. certification eligibility, or certification assessment by one of the following agencies:
ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist
  • MLS(ASCP)
  • ASCP Medical Technologist
  • MT(ASCP)
  • ASCP International Medical Laboratory Scientist
