Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Residential Counselor to join our team at the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC). As a Residential Counselor, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with complex needs, including homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily support and guidance to clients, promoting healthy living conditions and addressing challenges related to mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized service plans, ensuring seamless care coordination.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and clean environment, adhering to DESC's policies and procedures.
  • Engage with clients, staff, and community volunteers to foster a positive and respectful living environment.
  • Document services provided, including interventions, interactions, and client progress.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service trainings, and other professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Requirements
  • At least 6 months' experience in human services, preferably working with homeless adults, the economically disadvantaged, mentally ill, or chemically dependent.
  • Basic understanding of homelessness and various characteristics of the homeless adult population.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients displaying a wide range of unpleasant and/or bizarre behaviors.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BA degree in social work or other social or behavioral science.
  • Experience with the issues of mental illness and Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
  • Bilingual Spanish/English.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit, stand, walk, and go up and down stairs. The employee will be required to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as well as lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds. The ability to operate computer hardware systems is also required.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Considerable stress may occur.
