We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomy Specialist to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As a Phlebotomy Specialist, you will be responsible for performing phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections, providing patient care, and maintaining accurate records.
Key Responsibilities- Perform phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections in accordance with established protocols and policies.
- Provide patient care and education, including post-phlebotomy care and identifying need for medical assistance.
- Review and record refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records, reporting areas of concern to maintenance and supervisor.
- Use manual requisitions and labels specimens appropriately, labeling and processing specimens according to established protocols and policies.
- Procure blood specimens from infant, adult, geriatric, and wheelchair-bound patients, demonstrating competency for age-related responsibilities.
- Understand and operate equipment pertinent to the job, following up with outstanding orders and communicating with client office staff.
- Request and obtain written physician orders, accurately ordering laboratory tests in computer systems.
- Prioritize tasks, multitask, and maintain a less than 2% recollection or cancellation rate.
- Follow TJC National Patient Safety goals, presenting a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance.
- Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers, addressing questions and concerns promptly.
- Demonstrate teamwork, communicate effectively, and respect diverse opinions and styles.
- Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time, and participate in efforts to reduce costs and improve services.
- Communicate and notify Laboratory and/or Physician of problems with specimen procurement, providing follow-up on test results.
- Maintain a safe work environment, adhering to all recommendations and requirements of the Lab and Hospital Safety Committee.
- Perform clerical duties related to handling and processing of lab specimens, including faxing, printing, filing, reviewing, and verbally releasing laboratory results.
- Initiate responsibilities without prompting, completing tasks independently without immediate supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Phlebotomy certification or training required.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks and multitasking.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established protocols and policies.
