Role Summary:
The Citywide Teacher specializing in students with visual impairments is tasked with delivering direct educational instruction and consultative support to students identified with visual disabilities, as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participating in annual reviews and tri-annual evaluations for students.
  • Conducting assessments of functional vision and learning media.
  • Preparing necessary documentation for evaluations and IEP meetings.
  • Collaborating with educational teams to adapt curriculum and assessment methods to meet individual student needs.
  • Training students and staff on assistive technology tailored for visual disabilities.
  • Maintaining instructional plans and logs to track student progress.
  • Collecting data to measure achievement towards IEP goals.
  • Providing feedback and strategies to ensure student success in inclusive settings.
  • Teaching and assessing skills across the expanded core curriculum for visually impaired students.
  • Engaging in professional development to enhance instructional strategies.

The Vision Impairment Education Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Delivering direct educational services for a designated group of students with visual disabilities.
  • Working closely with classroom educators to implement effective strategies and accommodations.
  • Conducting assessments to inform instructional practices and student evaluations.
  • Consulting with families to discuss student progress and reinforcement strategies.
  • Providing training on specialized equipment designed for visually impaired learners.
  • Participating in continuous professional development and sharing insights with colleagues.
  • Adhering to all data collection requirements related to student performance and educator accountability.

Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a valid teaching license in Illinois for students with visual disabilities.

Experience: A minimum of two years of teaching experience with students who are blind or have visual impairments.

Skills and Knowledge:
- Proficiency in literary braille and the Nemeth code.
- Expertise in teaching the use of screen reading and enlarging software, braille note takers, and other assistive devices.
- Familiarity with the common core state standards and the expanded core curriculum for visually impaired students.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.

Employment Conditions:
Employees are required to establish and maintain residency within the City of Chicago within a specified timeframe and comply with vaccination requirements as mandated by CPS.
