The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is accountable for performing a wide range of diagnostic tests on patient specimens, including blood, bodily fluids, cells, and tissues, to identify health conditions. Utilizing advanced biomedical equipment, microscopes, and computer systems, the specialist delivers critical data to healthcare providers to assist in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions.

Qualifications

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, encompassing coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, and mathematics, along with successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) program, or certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) with two years of full-time laboratory experience in a recognized laboratory setting.

Professional Experience

Prior experience in an accredited laboratory is preferred.

Certifications and Licenses

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized certifying body is mandatory. This includes but is not limited to:

• American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

• National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA)

• American Medical Technologies (AMT)

• Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW)

• Other relevant laboratory certifying organizations.

Colleagues hired prior to a specified date are exempt from this requirement. Certification must be obtained within 180 days of employment.
