Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Overview:

The Engineering Technician I role serves as the foundational level within the Engineering Technician classification and is situated in Kansas City, KS. Candidates demonstrating suitable experience and qualifications may be considered for a higher-level appointment. This position enables the State of Kansas to cultivate and enhance the skills of construction (or technician) personnel to fulfill essential duties. The employee engages in tasks and acquires experience while in a developmental capacity.

Key Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting in the management of construction contracts to ensure compliance with legal standards and the attainment of desired quality. This will necessitate adherence to specific instructions and established criteria.
  • Engaging in basic engineering and mathematical procedures, which require following guidelines and maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of the work performed.
  • Conducting or aiding other technicians or engineers in executing routine engineering tests in both laboratory and field settings, or inspecting construction projects for adherence to standard practices, specifications, plans, and special provisions. This may involve performing or assisting in the testing of aggregate gradation and other standard assessments.

Qualifications:

  • A valid Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained. Training for the CDL is provided at no cost to the employee.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate must successfully pass the screening as a condition of employment.
  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT pre-employment/pre-duty drug test as a condition of employment in this position. Participation in random testing, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing is also required.
  • Any Commercial Driver who has received a Confirmed Positive Result or the Equivalent and has not successfully completed all Rehabilitation Program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position.
  • A Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is required in accordance with Executive Order. Each applicant selected for a State of Kansas job vacancy must apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate within 10 days from the date of the offer letter.
