UPMC is seeking a Registered Sleep Specialist to become a part of our dedicated team on a casual basis.

Position Overview:
This role involves working under the direct guidance of the lead technologist, collaborating closely with senior technologists and the medical director or their designee. The primary focus is on delivering comprehensive assessment and management of sleep disorders, which includes both in-center and out-of-center sleep evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, as well as thorough patient care and education.

Key Responsibilities:

Preparation for Sleep Studies:
- Gather, assess, and integrate patient data to identify and address specific patient needs, including physical and mental limitations, emotional and physiological status, and relevant medical and social history.
- Collaborate with the ordering physician or clinical director to finalize testing parameters and procedures, ensuring adherence to laboratory protocols.
- Upon patient arrival, confirm identity, collect necessary documents, and obtain consent for the study.

Setup for Sleep Studies:
- Clearly explain the procedure to the patient and orient them for either in-center or out-of-center testing.
- Select and calibrate appropriate equipment to ensure proper functioning, making adjustments as necessary.
- Apply electrodes and sensors in accordance with established protocols.

Conducting Sleep Studies:
- Execute routine sleep procedures following established protocols, including diagnostic tests, multiple sleep latency tests, home sleep testing, and positive airway pressure (PAP) titrations.
- Ensure accurate physiological calibrations to maintain signal integrity and make necessary adjustments.
- Document observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Implement necessary interventions for patient safety and therapeutic measures, such as positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
- Complete the data collection process by verifying the integrity of collected data and instructing patients on completing questionnaires.
- Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events according to professionally accepted guidelines.

Service Management and Essential Skills:
- Adhere to applicable laws, regulations, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA policies to ensure the privacy and security of patient information.
- Conduct routine equipment maintenance and inventory management, ordering supplies as needed.
- Exhibit effective communication skills, both written and verbal, appropriate for the role.
- Demonstrate customer service skills and critical thinking to address procedural inquiries from sleep patients.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and complete any required educational training.

Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited polysomnography education program is preferred.
- Required credentials must be obtained within 18 months of employment.
- A minimum of one year of medical background experience is necessary, along with completion of on-the-job training.

Licensure and Certifications:
- Sleep credential from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists or equivalent is required within 18 months of employment.
- CPR certification based on AHA standards is required within 30 days of hire.
- Additional certifications may be required.
