Job Overview:

As a result of significant expansion in our operations, L3Harris Technologies is actively seeking a proficient Optical Systems Engineer. This position requires an experienced professional with a solid foundation in the field of photonics. The selected candidate will play a crucial role in providing technical expertise for our current technologies while also innovating new solutions to engage and lead initiatives with our military, governmental, and commercial clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, simulate, modify, and evaluate optical communication subsystems.
  • Design, simulate, modify, and evaluate RF photonic subsystems.
  • Choose components and equipment based on thorough analysis of program specifications.
  • Facilitate internal and external design reviews for photonic systems.
  • Collaborate with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to achieve development objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Optics, Optical Engineering, or Quantum Science with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience. A Graduate Degree with at least 4 years of related experience may also be considered. Alternatively, a minimum of 10 years of related experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
  • 3+ years of experience in modeling and/or designing photonic systems.
  • Experience in generating technical documentation for business proposals.
  • 1+ years of experience in developing prototype optical systems.
  • 1+ years of experience leading a product development team.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in the design, modeling, development, and testing of quantum sensors, particularly Rydberg electric field sensors.
  • Knowledge of quantum physics relevant to the advancement of quantum technologies, including but not limited to quantum sensing, quantum time distribution, entanglement, and entanglement distribution.
  • Familiarity with atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics theory.
  • Understanding of Digital Lightwave Communications: Physical layer systems, components (EDFA, Modulators, SFPs, Switches, etc.) and modules for optical communication systems.
  • Expertise in Coherent RF Photonics: Transport and processing of analog signals (radar, wireless communications, etc.) using optical systems.
  • Experience with Photonic Integrated Circuits: Enhancing Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) for photonic systems utilizing photonic integrated circuits.
  • Knowledge of Optical multi-input multi-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP): Enhancing optical system throughput and bit error rate (BER) through post-processing techniques.
  • Proficiency in Photonic Modeling: Ability to model photonic systems using software packages such as MATLAB, OptSim, BeamProp, Zemax, HFSS.
  • Experience with product development for government contracts.
  • Clearance: TS/SCI with poly preferred.
