Nutrition Specialist, Falls Church, VA

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Conduct thorough nutrition assessments to document dietary history, health concerns, and psychosocial factors affecting nutritional status.
  • Perform anthropometric evaluations to assess growth and nutritional health, comparing results to established standards.
  • Utilize software and published dietary data to analyze nutrient intake and compare it to the clinical requirements.
  • Design and recommend tailored nutrition plans, including enteral and parenteral nutrition, based on current best practices.
  • Educate staff, patients, and families on medical nutrition therapy and dietary management.
  • Develop, review, and update policies and standards related to nutrition practice.

Qualifications

Eligibility: US Citizens

To qualify, candidates must meet the educational and experience criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles in various organizations. Relevant experience must be clearly detailed in your resume. If qualifying through education, transcripts will be required.

Basic Requirements for Nutrition Specialist:

A Bachelor's or higher degree in dietetics, nutrition, food service management, or a related field from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is required. Alternatively, completion of a coordinated program or internship approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is acceptable. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is also a valid qualification.

Exemption: Current federal employees in the 0630 occupational series who have been continuously employed since a specified date may be exempt from the basic requirements.

In addition to the basic qualifications, candidates must possess specialized experience in providing medical nutrition therapy, including nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and monitoring, as well as educating patients or staff on nutrition topics.

Education

Foreign Education: If using foreign education to meet qualifications, candidates must provide documentation that verifies the equivalency of their education to U.S. accredited programs.
