The Culinary Institute of America is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Counseling Services to lead our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team. As a key member of our Division of Student Affairs, you will provide administrative and clinical leadership, ensuring the delivery of high-quality mental health services to our students.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Supervision: Direct clinical operations for CAPS, including supervision and evaluation of staff clinicians, and implementing best practices in the field.
- Counseling Services: Provide counseling services to students on personal or psychological issues, maintaining a reasonable client caseload and adhering to best practices.
- Consultation and Education: Offer consultation to students, faculty, staff, and college leaders on mental health and developmental/transitional needs of students.
- Record Management: Ensure proper management and confidentiality of department records, complying with federal and state laws regarding mental health services and related higher education regulations.
- Reporting and Analysis: Analyze data and provide required periodic reports.
- Administrative Operations: Conduct administrative operations for the department, including participation in new student and parent orientations, committee work, wellness activities, and outreach/educational projects.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborate with the New York CAPS team for consultation and professional development, and contribute to the cooperative nature of interactions between Counseling, Student Affairs, Academic Advising, Campus Safety, Title IX office, and other campus-wide departments.
- Community Relations: Establish and maintain relationships with college and regional community organizations, including other colleges, psychiatrists, hospitals, mental health agencies, non-profits, and health organizations.
- Crisis Intervention: Initiate and/or monitor campus crisis interventions and follow-ups.
- Committee Work: Participate on college-wide committees.
- Referral Resources: Represent CAPS in the local community and cultivate referral resources for students' needs.
- Policy Planning: Assist the Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs with policy planning on drugs/alcohol, mental health, and Title IX issues.
- Staff Recruitment and Training: Recruit, hire, and train new CAPS clinical and support staff, in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Education: Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work.
- Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years of experience (post-licensure) providing mental health counseling, with two (2) or more years of supervisory experience.
- Licenses/Certifications: Valid license to practice as a LCSW or a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of California or eligibility to transfer out-of-state license to meet California licensure eligibility.
- Experience with College-Age Students: Two (2) or more years of experience working with college-age students.
- Supervisory Experience: Three (3) or more years providing supervision and administrative oversight in a college or university counseling center.
- Federal and State Mental Health Laws: Knowledge and practice of Federal and State mental health laws and professional codes of conduct.
- Leadership and Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated innovative leadership practices and exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Technology Background: Strong technology background, including platforms such as websites, Facebook, Listservs, etc.
- Coaching and Mentoring: Ability to coach, mentor, and develop staff to advance a workplace culture of safety, inclusion, and engagement with all campus constituents.
- Service Responsiveness: Demonstrated ability to show a high level of service responsiveness to internal customers and effective partnerships with colleagues throughout the college.
- Confidentiality and Discretion: Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive mental health issues with confidentiality and discretion.
- Teamwork and Self-Motivation: Must have a proven consistent track record showing the ability to work independently or in a team environment with all levels within an organization, and display a high level of energy and self-motivation.
- Business Acumen: Broad business savvy, with a solid grasp of financial and operating goals, and a track record of achieving measurable success for meeting objectives, managing costs, and achieving change.
- Communication and Presentation Skills: Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required, with demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Computer Experience: Strong computer experience, including abilities to work effectively with Electronic Medical Records databases (EMR) and MS Office suite products, i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Availability: Must be available to work nights and weekends as required due to business needs.
- On-Call Schedule: Must be able to participate in an on-call schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Computer Use: Regular work requires the use of a computer, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day.
