Job Title: School Janitor

Job Summary:

The Bureau of Indian Education is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented School Janitor to join our team. As a School Janitor, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and clean learning environment for students and faculty staff. This is a full-time position that requires a high level of physical activity and attention to detail.

Responsibilities:
  • Clean and maintain the school's buildings, offices, classrooms, storerooms, corridors, stairways, and other assigned areas.
  • Perform a full range of cleaning assignments, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors.
  • Dust, wax, and polish furniture; empty wastebaskets; clean and polish doorknobs and other metal fixtures.
  • Vacuum and spot clean rugs and carpets; wash and replace venetian blinds; wash ceiling/light fixtures; change light bulbs or fluorescent tubes using ladders and scaffold.
  • Moves heavy furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Wash walls, partitions, and windows; wash and clean ceiling vents; clean mirrors and water fountains.
  • Perform other related custodial work.
  • Maintain, adjust, clean, and oil machinery and equipment used.
  • Empties trash cans and relines cans with liners.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans spills; cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.
  • Performs seasonal tasks such as applying salt or other ice control material, and operating snow blower or uses shovels to remove snow and ice from walkways, entry ways, and drive ways.
  • Ensures that appropriate and necessary levels of inventory are on hand at assigned areas, orders necessary supplies and materials, and maintains accurate records of received and distributed items.
  • Practices required and regularly accepted safety/sanitation precautions while performing cleaning and maintenance duties.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition.
  • Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted.
  • Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required, except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf.
  • Good hand and foot coordination required.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual medical examination.
Working Conditions:

The incumbent is required to operate a US Government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties. A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do may result in removal from the position.

Occasionally, the employee is expected to work other than normal hours as necessary to handle emergency situations or peak workloads.

Incumbent may also be required to report to work in early morning hours to shovel snow or de-ice in cases of extreme weather conditions.

The incumbent is subject to background investigations.
