About the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science
The Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science (BEES) provides educational opportunities for students at Drexel University through online, in-person, and hybrid formats. The department excels in environmental science and studies, ecology, geoscience, sustainability, and biodiversity-systematic biology. Our experiential learning opportunities include field-based classroom experiences and partnerships with the Academy of Natural Sciences. Our motto, "Field Experience, Early and Often," signifies that many courses incorporate fieldwork or field components. Students acquire practical field experience through various classes, research projects, and Co-op placements. They also enjoy exceptional access to outstanding facilities, including local and international field sites, Drexel's Gold-LEED-certified Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building, and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the oldest natural history museum in the Western Hemisphere. Faculty members are distinguished scientists from Drexel and the Academy, specializing in environmental science, earth science, ecology and conservation, biodiversity and evolution, geoscience, and paleontology.
Position Overview
The adjunct faculty member will utilize diverse teaching strategies to promote student engagement and discussions, while fostering active learning among all participants. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate course-related records, assessing student performance, and providing constructive feedback to guide students toward achieving course objectives. Each adjunct faculty member is accountable for effectively instructing students in the designated classroom or online setting. Duties may encompass teaching during various times, including potential online-only, in-person-only, or a combination of both formats.
Course Offerings
ENSS 120: Introduction to Environmental Studies (3.0 Credits)
This course explores a range of topics within the interdisciplinary realm of environmental studies, including biodiversity, preservation, conservation, sustainability, deforestation, environmental justice, risk society, treadmill of production, and climate change. Students will be introduced to the concepts, issues, and practices associated with these themes.
GEO 301: Advanced Field Methods in Earth Science (3.0 Credits)
This skills-based course emphasizes essential geoscience field techniques. Students will learn about surface and subsurface mapping, coring methods and core analysis, remote sensing techniques, and sampling strategies. This course builds upon GEO 103 and prepares students for advanced field studies.
Key Responsibilities
As an adjunct faculty member, you will be responsible for:
- Developing a syllabus in accordance with University guidelines or delivering the course as per the syllabus and materials provided by the department.
- Conducting the course section(s).
- Being accessible to students (e.g., responding to inquiries; holding office hours, etc.).
- Maintaining precise documentation of course records to substantiate submitted grades.
- Submitting student grades in alignment with University policy.
- Providing any additional grading documentation as required by the department.
- Performing any other duties directly related to the course as assigned by the department head or program director.
Qualifications
Applicants must possess a Bachelor's Degree and have a minimum of 5 years of experience teaching at the university level in the fields of environmental science and studies, ecology, geoscience, sustainability, and biodiversity-systematic biology.
