Job Summary

The Property and Plant Maintenance Technician is a key member of the Greensboro Day School team, responsible for ensuring the maintenance, alteration, and repair of the school's facilities. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintenance and Repair: Perform a variety of tasks that require the ability to repair, install, service, and maintain building facilities, grounds, and building equipment.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance of roofs, motors, exit/emergency lights, generator, service vehicle, etc.
  • Plumbing and Painting: Perform interior and exterior painting and a variety of plumbing repairs/maintenance, including restroom commode and sink fixtures, drinking fountains, snaking drain lines, and rerouting of plumbing.
  • Hardware and Furniture Repair: Perform a broad spectrum of hardware (for doors) repairs and installations, as well as refinish and make repairs to furniture, tables, and chairs.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform small equipment repairs to replace vacuum parts and the like.
  • Facilities Support: Move furniture, equipment, and materials around the school, load and deliver tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings and special events, and operate a variety of hand and power tools and vehicles.
  • Safety and Security: Safely work from ladders, scaffolding, and lifts, and keep tools and equipment in good operating condition; regularly check and inspect.
  • Custodial Duties: Perform custodial duties as requested by the Director of Facilities and Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all maintenance and repair projects, assist in promoting the safety, health, and comfort of students and employees in school buildings and grounds, and perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer, Director of Facilities, and Maintenance Supervisor.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma; associate's degree in maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in construction or maintenance/repair for a large facility.
  • Skills: Trained to operate a variety of hand and power tools and vehicles, trained in safety procedures concerning ladders, scaffolding, and lifts, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and personal qualities of credibility and unwavering commitment to Greensboro Day School's mission.
Working Conditions

Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Regular weekend, early morning, and evening hours are required. This position may be required to work when campus is closed and work outside during inclement weather conditions. This position must be available to communicate by phone. The noise level in this work environment is moderate to high.

Physical Requirements

The position involves continuous physical activity and the job may be physically demanding. It requires, at times, heavy physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job. The position may require the employee to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, and do repetitive tasks with few breaks. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
