San Jose, California, United States County of Santa Clara CA Full time
Compensation: $103,731.68 Annually

Position Type: Full-Time

Department: Sheriff Services

Overview:

Individuals interested in this position must have completed a minimum of 38 semester units (or 57 quarter units) of college coursework at the time of application. Applications lacking the requisite educational units will not be considered.

We accept scores from the California PELLET B written examination from other agencies, provided the score is 48 or higher and the test was taken within a year of the application submission. It is the applicant's responsibility to include proof of the written exam results with their application. The results must be on official agency letterhead and include the type of test, date taken, and the score achieved.

In accordance with California Senate Bill 960, effective January 1, 2023, it is no longer mandatory for peace officers to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents eligible for citizenship; they must only be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Applicants must meet employment criteria and successfully complete the National Testing Network (NTN) examination for Law Enforcement to qualify for the agility test. The NTN examination details can be found on the official website.

Important Note: Candidates must submit their NTN score to the appropriate department before the specified deadline. The agility test is tentatively scheduled for a future date.

A Law Enforcement Trainee will undergo training to become a Deputy Sheriff, performing essential law enforcement duties under supervision, including the protection of life and property, crime investigation, apprehension of offenders, and execution of civil processes.

Upon successful completion of the examination and screening processes, candidates will be eligible for hire as Law Enforcement Trainees and will attend the Basic Peace Officer Academy training program.

Agility Examination: Prior to appointment, candidates must pass an agility test, which includes four timed events: solid fence climb, 99-yard obstacle course, dragging a 165-lb bag for 32 feet, and a 500-yard run.

Once hired, Trainees will participate in a 26-week Basic Peace Officer Academy training program. Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance. As trainees, individuals are not entitled to overtime or holiday pay while attending the Academy.

After graduating from the Academy, Trainees may be sworn in as regular Deputy Sheriffs at the beginning of the next pay period and will be considered probationary employees.

Deputy Sheriffs assigned to patrol and administrative roles will receive a 10% pay differential in addition to their base salary.

A 5% salary increase is available for satisfactory job performance six months after appointment as a Deputy Sheriff at Step 1.

Newly appointed Deputy Sheriffs must complete an 18-month probationary period, during which they will undergo training under the supervision of a training officer. The County provides all necessary safety equipment as mandated by law.

Advanced training opportunities are available at the departmental level and in collaboration with local educational institutions, state, and national agencies. Regular County policies on tuition reimbursement apply to Deputy Sheriffs.

Upon graduation from the POST Academy, newly appointed Deputy Sheriffs must sign a payroll deduction authorization for union membership dues or an equivalent service fee, with a cancellation period of thirty (30) calendar days.

Employment Standards:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) Certificate and completion of 38 college semester units (57 quarter units) at the time of application.
  • Applicants over 20 years old may apply but cannot be appointed until they are 21.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and an acceptable driving record qualifying for a County driving permit.
  • No felony convictions; any felony conviction or equivalent disqualifies the applicant.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass a thorough medical examination based on established standards.
  • Demonstrated physical fitness to perform job functions.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
Deputy Sheriffs are required to maintain CPR and first-aid training certifications.

Applicants disqualified based on medical or psychological evaluations may not reapply for one year.

Successful completion of a psychological evaluation is also required.
