Job Summary

The Licensed Vocational Nurse is a critical member of the health services team, working under the supervision of the District Nurse to provide nursing services for students and staff, and ensuring access and continuity of health care for students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatment as ordered by a physician to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children.
  • Assess situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug), and other health-related issues to identify problems, refer for proper treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with parents, students, healthcare providers, and/or other agencies to promote needed treatment, secure information, and comply with legal requirements.
  • Conduct primary evaluations of ill or injured students, including interviewing and physical assessments, to meet immediate health care needs and/or maintain compliance with county health department requirements and/or District policies.
  • Implement specialized health care procedures, such as blood sugar testing, catheterization, blood pressure, oral suction, gastrostomy tube feedings, drug screening, seizure procedures, turning and lifting routines, assistive apparatus, etc., to address students' health needs and/or implement health care directions from parents and/or physicians.
  • Maintain health care records, including mandated screening, medication authorization slips, student emergency cards, confidential health lists, medical reports, immunization records, billings, etc., to ensure compliance with established regulations.
  • Participate in various meetings, including campus safety committee, disaster committee, training, informational meetings, IEPs, etc., to convey and/or receive information on a variety of health care issues.
  • Prepare written materials, including health charts, special reports, health advisory lists, notices, billings, etc., to document activities, provide written support, and/or convey information.
  • Refer students requiring further medical attention to provide access and continuity of health care for students.
  • Report incidents, including fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc., to maintain students' personal safety, a positive learning environment, and adhere to Education Code, district, and/or school policies.
  • Report students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities to minimize infection and comply with legal requirements.
Requirements
  • Valid State of California License of Vocational Nursing.
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate.
  • Continuing Education/Training: Every 2 years to maintain license.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance; TB Clearance.
Working Environment

The Licensed Vocational Nurse works in a fast-paced environment, requiring occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity.

The job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, and 50% standing, and is performed under some hazardous conditions and in varying atmospheric conditions.
