Job Overview – Lead Software Architect
Position Title: Lead Software Architect
Reports to: Chief Technology Officer
Employment Status: Full-time, Regular, Salary, Exempt
About Dimer Instruments
At Dimer Instruments, we are pioneering the future of laboratory and process analytical tools tailored for the pharmaceutical sector. Our innovative products utilize various light-based spectroscopic techniques to analyze solutions containing molecules and particles, equipping researchers with not just data but structured insights that facilitate informed decision-making. Our automated process systems provide essential feedback for Quality by Design. Here, you will collaborate with a talented, high-performing, and enjoyable team of Engineers and Scientists dedicated to creating impactful products while enjoying the journey.
Position Summary
The Lead Software Architect at Dimer Instruments will have a unique opportunity to establish a software team and environment that aligns with their vision. As the technical leader, they will select the programming languages and development frameworks that best serve the product and business needs, while also defining the overarching architecture for all software systems within the product and manufacturing domains. This role offers the chance to strike a balance between implementing sufficient procedures to maintain organization and efficiency without hindering creativity.
The products being developed include: 1) laboratory instruments featuring an integrated computer that manages various hardware functions such as motion control, temperature regulation, data acquisition from multiple measurement methods, system health monitoring, and a user interface displaying real-time data and system status; 2) a desktop application that interfaces with and controls the instrument, retrieves data, and provides scientific analysis and graphical data representation; and 3) local and cloud-based data storage solutions that ensure data integrity and compliance for regulatory reporting. The ideal candidate will not need to be an expert in all areas but should possess significant expertise in several, along with the ability to collaborate effectively to bring in additional skills as necessary.
In addition to mentoring a small team of 3-4 in-house developers, the Lead Software Architect will determine when to engage external resources for coding or tool development and will oversee outsourced projects to meet company objectives and timelines. They will collaborate closely with Marketing and Applications teams to translate market needs into product specifications and will work with the team to break down these specifications into manageable tasks for development. During planning phases, supported by upper management, they will judiciously manage project scope to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products. They will also supervise the implementation of Software Quality Assurance (SQA) practices, balancing thoroughness with efficiency, and will be responsible for custom code necessary for manufacturing processes. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, ensuring that Dimer Instruments delivers products that empower scientists.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of software developers to create top-tier software for instruments and desktop applications.
- Develop and maintain a software roadmap and schedule, contributing to the establishment of company-wide goals and managing programs to meet development timelines and budget constraints.
- Implement software infrastructure from the ground up, including build tools, version control systems, code review processes, and product lifecycle management, ensuring best practices are documented and followed.
- Oversee the selection of programming languages, software architecture, testing plans, and release procedures for all Dimer software products, including customer-facing applications and internal tools.
- Establish and maintain aligned goals for all direct reports, ensuring their objectives are derived from broader company goals.
- Engage with Marketing and customers to comprehend user requirements and convert these into documented product specifications.
- Ensure comprehensive documentation exists for all Dimer software products, including overseeing contributions to user manuals as necessary.
- Guarantee that all projects have clear requirements and definitions of completion, holding the software team to high standards.
- Contribute to patent applications as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Software Engineering or a related discipline.
- Over 10 years of experience in bringing software products to market, with more than 3 years in a leadership role.
- Familiarity with modern programming technologies, agile methodologies, and DevOps practices.
- Comfortable in a scientific environment and capable of grasping the fundamentals of measurement methods and product applications.
Additional Skills
Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration across the organization. The candidate should be socially adept, able to navigate various groups with differing needs, and work with stakeholders to develop solutions that require compromise. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is necessary for drafting reports, work instructions, business correspondence, and manuals. The candidate should be able to present work in an organized manner for project and design reviews. Familiarity with document control systems and product lifecycle management tools is also required.
Work Environment
The role will involve working in office settings, optics and chemistry laboratories, warehouses, and manufacturing spaces. The employee may occasionally encounter moderate noise levels from equipment. Travel may be necessary for testing, customer engagements, conferences, or training.
