Job Overview

Library Systems & Services is in search of a meticulous and skilled German Language Catalog Specialist. In this role, you will be tasked with the cataloging of our extensive collection of German language publications for a prominent federal library. Your primary responsibility will be to create and maintain cataloging records within an Integrated Library System (ILS), ensuring precision and thoroughness.

  • Compensation: Work is compensated on a piece rate basis

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop Original, Enhanced Minimum Level, and Copy Cataloging records for collections of German language materials across various subjects
  • Accurately catalog German titles by providing essential metadata in MARC21 compliant bibliographic records
  • Classify collections of monographic materials
  • Create and update records in an ILS cataloging system, ensuring adherence to NACO standards for accuracy and completeness
  • Provide recommendations for new subject headings and classification numbers
  • Stay informed about advancements in cataloging standards and best practices

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science or an equivalent qualification from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Proficient command of the German language
  • A minimum of 3 years of cataloging experience
  • Strong understanding of cataloging standards, including RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCC, MARC21, BIBCO, and NACO
  • Familiarity with library management systems such as Voyager, ILS, OCLC Connexion, Classification Web, Cataloger's Desktop, and the LC Authorities list
  • Practical experience with metadata and taxonomies for catalog collections
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks
