**Primary Role:** The Senior GIS Technician is responsible for utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop and maintain spatial and attribute data while leading quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) initiatives for American Water's GIS data.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Employ GIS technology to create and sustain spatial and attribute data in accordance with established operating procedures and best practices.
- Mentor and train GIS Technicians on water and wastewater network structures, assisting them in applying their knowledge to maintain American Water's GIS data and proper editing techniques.
- Support the development and maintenance of quality assurance processes that enhance the integrity of GIS data.
- Execute quality control checks and report on any identified quality issues.
- Continuously enhance GIS expertise by participating in workshops, training sessions, or vendor presentations focused on evolving GIS technologies, particularly in QAQC.
- Contribute to the establishment of GIS standards and procedures, participating in user committees to share GIS knowledge.
- Adhere to standard operating procedures and best practices in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) usage.
- Provide constructive feedback to the state GIS lead and collaborate with team members for continuous improvement.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
**Knowledge/Skills:**
- Ability to conduct thorough evaluations and make timely decisions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- In-depth understanding of water and wastewater network structures applicable to GIS data maintenance.
- Solid foundation in GIS methodologies, Esri software, geocoding techniques, data model formats, and data conversion practices.
- Familiarity with GIS workflows, including desktop mapping, editing, QAQC, and web/database applications.
- Proficient in interpreting and processing various source GIS inputs, including GNSS data and construction as-builts.
- Basic understanding of QAQC principles for GIS data, including industry best practices and Esri QAQC tools.
- Knowledge of the Esri ArcGIS suite, particularly ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro, focusing on data creation, editing, and QAQC techniques.
**Experience/Education:**
- Associate's degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in GIS, with utility experience preferred.
**Travel Requirements:**
- Occasional local and national travel may be required.
**Work Environment:**
- Combination of indoor and outdoor settings.
**Other Requirements:**
- Valid Driver's License and ability to pass a motor vehicle background check.
