Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at The University of Iowa is seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant to provide direct patient care, including psychiatric diagnostic evaluations and medication management services, under the supervision of a physician. This role involves working in multiple settings, including outpatient clinics, crisis observation units, and emergency services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assure clinical competency and expertise in psychiatry, following universal precautions.
  • Function independently or as part of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate healthcare for a defined patient population.
  • Evaluate adult psychiatry outpatients, including changes in course of illness and response to treatment.
  • Provide emergency evaluation/consultation for patients in the emergency room and/or Crisis Stabilization Unit.
  • Work with the APP team to provide coverage for services outside of 8-5 business hours if needed.
  • Assist in evaluating medication side effects.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing psychiatry administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
  • Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
  • Promote health maintenance spanning the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, residents, students, and the public.
  • Serve in a consultative and resource capacity to other divisions, the department, and the community as needed.
  • Participate in the development, utilization, and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in the area of clinical expertise.
  • Provide education to external agencies, community, and other health professionals.
  • Provide leadership to incorporate research findings into practice.
  • Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Assume responsibility for administrative activities and special projects as delegated by the Medical Directors.
  • Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals as delegated.
Requirements
  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners, including graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in psychiatry is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and maintain flexibility within a changing clinical environment.
  • Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating with healthcare members providing care for highly complex patients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Physician Assistant post-graduate training in psychiatry.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with adults in a psychiatric setting.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary process improvement.
