Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to join our team as a Hospitalist in the Inpatient Malignant Hematology service at The University of Iowa. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide exceptional patient care, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide overall medical care and management for patients, including initial evaluations, complete history and physical examinations, and appropriate orders for treatment.
  • Collaborate with the care team to optimize care delivery, coordinate transitions of care, and use judgment to provide continuity of care.
  • Perform and record medical histories and physical examinations, evaluate, diagnose, and treat medical conditions, and document findings in the electronic medical record.
  • Discuss testing and treatment options with patients and families, utilizing technology to update personal knowledge and maintain knowledge of accrediting bodies' expectations.
  • Coordinate or deliver services to patients requiring continuing care, refer patients to appropriate clinicians as indicated, and evaluate, treat, and institute procedures as training and privileging allows.
  • Perform procedures on patients, such as bone marrow biopsies, skin biopsies, diagnostic lumbar punctures, and management of indwelling catheters.
  • Complete written medical record documentation, including admission notes, inpatient patient progress notes, and hospital discharge summaries.
  • Facilitate communication with internal and external healthcare providers, maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources, and order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other related studies.
  • Prescribe, order, and administer medications, direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care, and complete medical record documentation and billing information in a timely manner.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA (for Physician Assistants) or a master's degree or Doctorate degree in nursing and board certification and registration as an ARNP in the state of Iowa (for Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, and highly desirable experience in internal medicine, critical care, or emergency medicine.
