Job Summary

The California Appellate Project (CAP) is a nonprofit legal resource center seeking a Racial Justice Act Case Coordinator. This is a high-impact position that offers the opportunity to help incarcerated death-sentenced individuals who historically have been denied remedies for the racism that has infected their trials.

About Us

CAP was established in 1983 and has three primary functions: assisting unrepresented condemned prisoners, supporting appointed counsel in state appellate and habeas corpus proceedings, and maintaining resources for court-appointed counsel. Our team works towards anti-racism and improving the criminal legal system.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of RJA developments and provide resources for CAP staff and court-appointed counsel.
  • Review individual cases for RJA violations and assess potential litigation options.
  • Lead and coordinate case-specific RJA brainstorms.
  • Guide internal discussions about the RJA and attend inter-agency meetings and trainings.
  • Ensure that CAP attorneys and investigators are updated on developments and best practices pertaining to the RJA.
  • Assist appointed counsel with other aspects of capital appellate and habeas litigation.

Requirements

  • Admission to the California Bar is required.
  • A minimum of four years' experience practicing criminal law, with experience in capital litigation and/or RJA litigation.
  • A deep commitment to working toward anti-racism and improving the criminal legal system.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in discussing issues of race and ethnicity.
  • Proven organizational and project management skills.

Salary Range

$85,000 - $110,000 per year, depending on experience.
