In this role, you'll play a critical part in ensuring the success of our mission by coordinating CAP's assistance in capital post-conviction litigation under the California Racial Justice Act (RJA). Your expertise will enable us to tackle complex RJA cases and drive forward positive change.

This position requires strong case coordination skills, a deep understanding of RJA developments, and a passion for working toward anti-racism and improving the criminal legal system. You'll be responsible for reviewing individual cases, providing assessments, and leading brainstorms to guide our team toward strategic litigation options.

Please find below the key responsibilities and requirements for this role.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of RJA developments and marshalling resources for staff and court-appointed counsel;
  • Reviewing individual cases for RJA violations and providing an assessment of potential litigation options;
  • Coordinating case-specific RJA brainstorms and guiding internal discussions about the RJA;
  • Attending inter-agency RJA meetings and training; and
  • Ensuring that CAP attorneys and investigators are updated on RJA developments and best practices.


Requirements:
  • Admission to the California Bar;
  • At least four years' experience practicing criminal law, with experience in capital litigation and/or RJA litigation;
  • Deep commitment to working toward anti-racism and improving the criminal legal system;
  • Commitment to developing litigation strategies for using the RJA in post-conviction cases;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of death penalty law and procedure;
  • Commitment to advocacy on behalf of indigent defendants;
  • Experience leading meetings and facilitating legal issues discussions;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple litigation tasks under tight time constraints;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proven organizational and project management skills.


Benefits and Compensation:
  • An estimated salary range of $81,000 - $153,000 per year;
