The organization offers a diverse array of programs and services aimed at improving the quality of life for residents throughout New York City's five boroughs, including childcare, youth development, senior services, behavioral health, and immigrant and community services.
The primary function of the Accounting Specialist is to assist the Finance team in overseeing daily financial operations, budgeting, and reporting.
Key Responsibilities- Provide accounting assistance for government contracts, which includes managing budgets, financial reporting, preparing vouchers, and justifying expenses for reimbursements.
- Support the monthly closing process and collaborate with Finance Department colleagues, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.
- Report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) while maintaining a high level of accountability and responsibility.
- Process bi-weekly payroll and handle other payroll-related tasks as assigned by the CFO.
- Record and manage Accounts Receivable and daily banking transactions.
- Assist in updating Accounts Payable, issuing checks, and processing other payments as necessary.
- Contribute to the monthly closing of financial records and general ledger entries.
- Help prepare financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annually) along with supporting schedules.
- Assist in the preparation of financial reports for funding sources as required.
- Support financial analysis and ensure compliance with internal policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain current knowledge of GAAP, as well as federal and state policies and accounting changes.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience, ideally within the finance department of a nonprofit organization.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Strong financial analysis capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel skills required.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to foster collaborative relationships with colleagues.
