General Overview of the Role
As a vital member of the pharmacy team, the Advanced Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in assisting licensed Pharmacists with the preparation and distribution of medications to patients. This position encompasses a variety of advanced technical functions that enhance the efficiency of pharmacy operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Consistently performs all duties associated with the Pharmacy Technician I role.
2. Under the guidance of a licensed Pharmacist, prepares various forms of medications for patient dispensing, which includes the selection, labeling, and packaging of pharmaceuticals, as well as the organization of medication carts.
3. Inputs physician orders into the hospital's computer system to maintain and update patient profiles and billing information.
4. Assists patients, nursing staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals with medication inquiries and pharmacy-related requests.
5. Monitors inventory levels and medication expiration dates, ensuring timely replenishment of stock as necessary. Conducts regular inspections of patient care and departmental areas.
Operational Duties
6. Fills and replaces medications in automated dispensing systems and delivers them to the appropriate nursing units.
7. Prepares various types of intravenous solutions and other sterile products using aseptic techniques.
8. Responsible for the delivery and retrieval of medications, including controlled substances, to and from patient care areas and satellite pharmacies.
9. Compounds medications in bulk or per individual prescriptions and prepares stock orders and unit-of-use packaging when necessary.
10. Maintains accurate records of controlled substance inventories.
Training and Maintenance
11. Participates in the orientation and training of new Pharmacy Technicians regarding departmental operations and computer systems.
12. Ensures that workstations are kept clean and organized.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; may require up to one year of specialized training.
- Experience: A minimum of eighteen months of hospital experience is required. Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program may substitute for six months of experience.
- Licenses and Certifications: Pharmacy Technician Registration required; certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or an equivalent national certification must be obtained within 180 days.
