Job Title: Lead Journey Mechanic

Join the Federal Way Public Schools team as a Lead Journey Mechanic, responsible for performing maintenance repairs and rebuilding functions on district fleet vehicles. As a lead, you will provide guidance, training, and direction to less experienced employees.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Rebuild and repair components and auxiliary systems on vehicles or make component changes.
  • Plan, direct, and assist with the work and performance of transportation department mechanics.
  • Maintain maintenance records of district equipment and other necessary records.
  • Perform minor body repairs and painting on vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair power train components, brake systems, chassis components, and body, lighting, heating, and electrical systems.
  • Complete work orders with proper cost and time data.
  • Perform necessary tests, including road tests, to ensure that repairs made are adequate.
  • Know and adhere to shop safety requirements.
  • Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines and make suggestions where needed.
  • Make recommendations concerning shop personal matters to shop manager.
  • Exercise independent judgment and work without close supervision. Has the authority to direct work force in cases of emergency.
  • Act as shop manager when shop manager is absent or not immediately available.
Requirements:
  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience or technical training in functions such as inspection, repair, or maintenance of medium and heavy-duty equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of basic, general-purpose, vehicle repair course.
Working Conditions:

The person in this position will frequently stand, walk, bend/stoop, twist, squat/kneel. The person will occasionally talk/hear, sit, climb 3-4 stairs into a bus and up to a 6 ft ladder, and use foot controls for operating various vehicles including 84 passenger size buses. Vision is in constant use in the position. Frequent use a computer screen and keyboard. The lift/carry requirements for this position include: constantly lift/carry up to 10 lbs; frequently 11-20 lbs; and occasionally 21-50 lbs. This position seldom lifts/carries lbs and should be done as a two-person lift.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work indoors and outdoors in inclement weather and must be able to demonstrate visual concentration on details. The employee experiences inflexible deadlines; frequent interruptions; and exposure to hazardous chemicals. The employee will be exposed to high noise level in the work environment. The employee is required to properly wear any personal protection equipment supplied by the District. Occasional exposure to angry, frustrated, or aggressive individuals. This position is subject to alternation shifts.

Work Schedule:

This position typically works 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, 260 days per year. Occasionally shop lead must work early morning or late evening hours and extra time during adverse weather conditions. Shop lead is always on call for emergency breakdowns.

Position reports to Shop Manager and Executive Director of Transportation.

Level of Compensation:

$45.23 DOE/salary schedule.
