The role involves conducting a diverse range of standard and advanced medical laboratory diagnostic tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses on blood and bodily fluid samples. This is essential for delivering laboratory data that aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Specific job criteria may differ based on the clinical area of assignment, with direct reporting to the technical section supervisor(s).
Educational Requirements
A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other relevant scientific disciplines is required, ideally complemented by a combination of experience and training.
Certifications and Licenses
Preferred certifications include MLS (ASCP) or an equivalent. Candidates must have the necessary experience or certification to qualify as general testing personnel in accordance with CLIA '88 regulations.
Professional Experience
Experience requirements vary by designated laboratory section, with a preference for candidates with experience in an acute care hospital laboratory. A solid understanding of laboratory regulations and a commitment to continuous quality improvement are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a team and possess a comprehensive understanding of laboratory medicine, applying this knowledge in collaboration with the patient care team to ensure accurate diagnoses in a timely manner. Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems is also expected.
Key Responsibilities
Conducts, interprets, documents, and reports clinical laboratory diagnostic assays. Implements quality control procedures. Ensures equipment is properly calibrated and maintained, performing preventive maintenance as required. Manages reagent supplies in accordance with laboratory policies and maintains a clean and organized laboratory environment. Engages in technical, procedural, and administrative problem-solving. Serves as a technical resource for the laboratory and hospital staff, providing guidance on fundamental theory, technical skills, and test procedure applications. Assists the Section Supervisor in evaluating new procedures, installing new instrumentation, and training on new or modified equipment. Develops technical procedures using the CLSI format. May assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the section supervisor. Provides training and orientation for Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians, including students. Participates in special projects and other related duties as assigned, volunteering for additional tasks as needed.
