Overview
The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in the surgical team, providing essential support to the physician in both invasive and non-invasive procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare the surgical environment with necessary drapes, solutions, instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring all tools are in optimal condition.
  • Assist in the preparation, transportation, positioning, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the operation, ensuring continuous monitoring and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Pass instruments to the surgeon during the procedure, ensuring a smooth workflow.
  • Continuously track the count and placement of instruments and supplies during surgery to prevent any loss.
  • Receive and handle specimens for laboratory testing as required.
  • Assist in applying wound dressings and securing drainage systems post-surgery.
  • Provide visualization of the surgical site through appropriate methods such as retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.

Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required upon hire.
  • No prior experience is necessary.
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is required within 90 days of employment OR
  • TS-C - Tech in Surgery-Certified through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) is required within 90 days of employment AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of employment.

  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make decisive judgments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to perform effectively in a high-pressure environment and respond appropriately.
  • Specific competencies related to the department are outlined in the unit/department scope of service.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Occasional sitting.
  • Frequent lifting of items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Rarely lifting items over 75 lbs.
  • Frequent carrying of items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent pushing and pulling of items weighing up to 75 lbs.
  • Occasional climbing, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Frequent reaching, talking, and hearing.
  • Frequent repetitive hand/arm movements and keyboard data entry.
  • Vision capabilities including depth perception, color distinction, and near and far sight.
