Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Accounting Clerk III, Part Time to join our team at the City of New Haven. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing complex and varied bookkeeping and record keeping work in the maintenance of financial records for a large City department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development of new or revised procedures to simplify operations and improve departmental services.
  • Assist in the development of budgets and maintain a variety of financial reports.
  • Process permits required for use by City facilities, collect fees, and provide public information on permits.
  • Prepare and forward documents pertaining to a variety of expenditures such as payment vouchers, purchase orders, requisitions, and other related financial data.
  • Compose and type correspondence as directed.
  • Perform related work as required.
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in bookkeeping and office management.
  • 5 years' experience in bookkeeping work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices as applied to accounting transactions.
  • Understanding of general budgeting principles, practices, and methods.
  • Understanding of basic governmental accounting methods and principles.
  • Understanding of modern office methods and procedures and of the use of and care of standard office and billing equipment.
  • Ability to maintain complex financial records and to prepare clerical and financial reports and statements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills to effectively prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
Working Conditions

This is a part-time position, not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of part-time employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent part-time positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time.
