Job Title: Code Compliance Supervisor

Job Summary:

The City of Punta Gorda is seeking a highly skilled Code Compliance Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our Urban Design department, you will be responsible for enforcing all of the City's Land Development Regulations, as well as Chapter 9A, Nuisance Code, as they relate to property zoning, design, and maintenance standards or other City Code standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the day-to-day Code Compliance operations
  • Enforce all of the City's Land Development Regulations and Chapter 9A, Nuisance Code
  • Oversee Code Compliance staff doing proactive on-site inspection for code compliance, and investigation of complaints based on Chapter 9 Nuisance Code and Chapter 26 Zoning Code
  • Supervise and train, safety appraisal and discipline of division personnel involved code compliance
  • Responsible for ensuring the proper organization, maintenance, and presentation of evidence, violation documents, including data, photos, supporting data, in appropriate order in compliance with State statutes
  • Supervise and reviews the preparation and investigation of Code Enforcement violations culminating in testimony and prosecution before the Code Enforcement board or court
  • Collaborate with City Attorney in preparing City's cases
  • Appear at Code Enforcement Board hearings and testify in Code Enforcement cases as needed
  • Appear in court when necessary to ensure that City codes are adhered to
  • Supervise daily operations of the Code Compliance division, ensures maintenance of daily and monthly activity logs and year-end statistical data
  • Meets with citizens groups to provide information regarding the City's Code and obtain input to address citizen concerns
  • Oversees the maintenance of Zoning and Code Compliance files
  • Talks with citizens making complaints or requesting service in person or by telephone, providing necessary information and following through on the resolution of problems
  • Keeps supervisor informed of details affecting office management decisions
  • Reviews incoming correspondence, drafting responses on matters for which authority has been delegated
  • Works with members of the public to reserve various City park locations for private or public functions
  • Reviews and prepares special event applications for review by the DRC, attends various planning meetings with event organizers to ensure understanding of public safety and other City requirements
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Works as a liaison between the County and public safety offices to ensure addresses geo-verify; updates and adds addresses and locations and corrects addressing errors
  • Reviews all DRC, building and sign permit applications as to conformance with the City's Land Development Regulations

Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school, or a GED from a properly accredited institution of learning
  • Four (4) years clerical experience in a reasonably fast-paced office environment
  • Two-to three-years of experience in code enforcement work or inspection experience and/or police investigative experience highly desirable, but not required
  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the requisite mental and communication skills
  • Notary Public or the ability to acquire a Notary Public's certification required
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license
  • Must have and maintain certification in the Florida Association of Code Enforcement (F.A.C.E.) certification

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May be required to exercise supervisory authority over other office or clerical personnel
  • Exercises direct supervisory authority over Code Compliance staff
