POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under direct supervision, the Culinary Support Specialist is responsible for food service tasks, including food preparation, serving, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen environment. This role involves adhering to established procedures and guidelines, with non-routine tasks referred to higher-level staff for direction. The position requires regular interaction with students, school personnel, and the community, and operates under the guidance of the Nutrition Services Supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Execute routine food preparation tasks.
- Serve meals to students and staff.
- Process applications for free and reduced meal programs as necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness through dishwashing and general kitchen upkeep.
- Transport food to various locations as required.
- Handle cash transactions and operate meal management software.
- Sell snack items and a la carte options.
- Assist in the kitchen's opening and closing procedures at the start and end of the school year.
- Support the organization and storage of kitchen equipment and food supplies.
- Ensure a consistent supply of food items is available.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
- Oversee student volunteers during service hours.
- Keep accurate records as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Meet performance standards as outlined in the evaluation process.
- Adhere to the physical and working conditions specified for the role.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates within a kitchen and cafeteria setting, where typical hazards associated with cooking equipment, such as hot surfaces and sharp tools, are present. The role may require lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasional use of stools or ladders. The employee will primarily be on their feet, walking, or seated as necessary.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
- Familiarity with kitchen tools and equipment.
- Understanding of safety and sanitation protocols.
- Awareness of USDA regulations relevant to food service.
- Knowledge of portion control guidelines.
Ability to consistently attend work and perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Operate kitchen equipment effectively.
- Supervise student volunteers.
- Comprehend and execute both oral and written instructions.
- Accurately manage financial transactions and record-keeping.
- Learn and utilize basic software applications as needed.
- Process meal sales and deposits efficiently.
- Comply with district policies regarding a drug-free workplace.
- Participate in food service training sessions as required.
- Obtain or maintain an Oregon Food Handler's Permit or current ServSafe certification.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. The role necessitates basic reading, writing, and communication skills, along with the ability to follow simple instructions and perform basic math. Minimal on-the-job training is expected, as the fundamental tasks can typically be learned quickly.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
Must possess or obtain an Oregon Food Handler's Permit.
