The Role:
Our team is looking for a Manufacturing Process Specialist to take charge of sustaining and quality assurance activities for our commercial offerings. This role will also spearhead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing process efficiency and minimizing product variability. The Specialist will collaborate closely with various operational functions to support manufacturing processes and address customer product quality concerns.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain productivity and quality standards within the manufacturing process. Responsibilities include managing non-conforming materials, establishing and reviewing SPC/SQC control limits, maintaining FMEAs and Control Plans, and participating in quality audits.
- Enhance productivity by identifying opportunities and implementing solutions that improve safety, quality, efficiency, and cost. Oversee and manage continuous improvement initiatives.
- Minimize variability in product and process parameters by pinpointing key contributors to variation and implementing robust control systems and improved manufacturing processes.
- Lead investigations into manufacturing anomalies by troubleshooting equipment and processes, conducting experiments, identifying root causes, and implementing effective corrective actions.
- Serve as the technical expert for equipment and processes, providing training and certification to operational staff. Offer technical troubleshooting support to team members.
- Mentor junior engineering staff, guiding their daily activities and long-term project work based on business needs.
- Design and execute experimental trials, manage new product scale-ups, and oversee new equipment installations as required.
- Oversee the development of operational programs and parameters for processing equipment.
- Facilitate machine breakdown resolutions by providing hands-on assistance and managing external repair resources as necessary.
- Contribute to the enhancement of the preventative maintenance program to optimize equipment uptime.
- Participate in a global engineering team to share best practices across various sites and operations.
- Enhance quality and utilization of automation equipment and processes, developing plans for future equipment expansions based on current insights.
- Collaborate with development engineering on new product transfers and manage scale-ups effectively.
- Work with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvements that enhance profitability and efficiency in manufacturing.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning within the team.
- Develop operational strategies to meet production and financial goals, demonstrating strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Polymer, Materials, or Chemical Engineering with over 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Experience in chemical blending, injection molding, or compression molding is preferred.
- Familiarity with manufacturing equipment featuring programmable user interfaces is advantageous.
- Experience in manufacturing planning and raw material coordination is a plus.
- Capital project management experience is desirable.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is preferred.
- Proficiency in statistical software is required, with experience in Minitab and/or JMP being a plus.
- Knowledge and experience in thermoset compression molding and/or chemical mixing operations.
- Technical understanding of production machinery and the ability to interpret operation manuals and engineering specifications.
- Strong statistical background related to Six Sigma, SPC/SQC, and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Effective planning, organization, and teamwork abilities.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to present technical information to management.
- Demonstrated professionalism and business acumen.
- Flexibility to meet manufacturing needs, including on-call support during evenings and weekends.
- Willingness to travel within the US as needed.
- Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC) and existing control systems is a plus.
- Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is beneficial.
- Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is an advantage.
