Title: Youth Development Professional II

Department: Programs

Reports To: Program Director

The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield is committed to fostering the growth of young individuals, particularly those in need, enabling them to reach their highest potential as responsible, productive, and compassionate members of society. We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Afterschool Counselor for our aftercare program. This pivotal role involves overseeing and interacting with campers to guarantee a safe, enjoyable, and enriching experience.

Operational Hours

Monday through Friday: 2:30 PM - 6:30 PM, with occasional shifts starting as early as 12:30 PM.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in all scheduled staff training sessions and meetings.
  • Guide and assist campers in various activities, ensuring safe and engaging participation.
  • Supervise daily activities, including outdoor programs.
  • Facilitate and lead assigned activities.
  • Exemplify positive behaviors such as cleanliness, punctuality, and sportsmanship.
  • Organize and lead diverse group activities, accommodating both small and large groups.
  • Regularly sanitize frequently used items and areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness by managing waste and recycling efforts.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow counselors and volunteers.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to support program operations.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A genuine desire and capability to work with children in outdoor settings.
  • Demonstrated character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, patience, and self-control.
Qualifications
  • Availability to work throughout the school year with minimal interruptions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and engage actively for extended periods.
  • Experience in camps, youth programs, recreation, or related fields is preferred.
  • Certifications in First Aid, AED, BLS, and CPR are advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Chat, Drive, Calendar).
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and communicate effectively.
Additional Requirements Upon Hire
  • At least one professional reference.
  • Staff Health Examination Form.
  • Mantoux Test date and results.
  • Physical Examination date.
  • Fingerprinting information and Identogo receipt (for candidates 18 and older).
  • Two forms of ID, one of which must be a Social Security Number.
Training & Compensation
  • Paid training will be provided to prepare for the role.
