The Medical Billing Specialist - Hard Collections will oversee the collection process for outstanding patient accounts. The specialist will collaborate with patients, insurance providers, and internal teams to resolve unpaid balances and secure timely payments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively engage with patients and insurance companies through various communication channels to facilitate payment on overdue accounts.
  • Monitor accounts receivable diligently, ensuring prompt follow-up on delinquent accounts.
  • Negotiate feasible payment plans with patients, balancing the need for payment with their financial capabilities.
  • Investigate and rectify billing discrepancies, disputes, and denials to expedite payment processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, including HIPAA and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all interactions and actions taken on each account.
  • Generate and present reports detailing collection activities, outstanding balances, and other pertinent metrics.
  • Collaborate closely with the billing department and insurance companies to resolve billing issues and enhance the collection workflow.
  • Provide patients with clear and concise explanations regarding their account status, payment options, and other necessary information.
  • Adhere to the professional standards outlined in the employee manual.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate's degree in healthcare administration, finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in medical billing and collections, particularly in hard collections.

Skills and Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of medical billing processes, insurance protocols, and coding systems (ICD-10, CPT).
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proficient in medical billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts efficiently and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal and state regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and capable of operating standard office equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and understand explanations of benefits (EOBs).
  • Excellent telephone etiquette and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods. Some bending, lifting, and stretching may be necessary. Manual dexterity is essential for operating a telephone and computer keyboard. The role involves regular communication with patients and may require working in high-pressure situations.
