Position Overview
This role is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which provides student loan reimbursement opportunities.

Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria as outlined by VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within the designated timeframe.

Approval of the program, award amounts (up to $200,000), and eligibility duration (ranging from one to five years) will be determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following a thorough review of the EDRP application.

Responsibilities
This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT.

Eligible applications will be reviewed periodically, and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies arise.

The VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package, including competitive salaries, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increases.

Work Schedule:
Full Time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
Paid Time Off:
50-55 days of paid time off annually, which includes 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid Federal holidays, along with a possible 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education (CME).
Retirement Benefits:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by the VA.

Comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance options available, many of which can be carried into retirement.
Licensure:
A full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. State or territory is required.
CME:
Possible reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time with board certification).

Contractual Obligations:
No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.
Key Duties:
The General Surgeon will perform a comprehensive range of surgical procedures related to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring surgical intervention.

Responsibilities include direct patient care in various settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatient facilities, operating rooms, and emergency departments, as directed by the Chief of Surgery or facility leadership.

Additional duties include administrative responsibilities assigned by the Chief of Surgery, involvement in preventative medicine, emergency preparedness, and compliance with internal and external health system requirements.

Supervision and training of surgical residents and other medical trainees will also be part of the role.

On-call services will be provided fairly and equitably, adhering to a pre-determined schedule.

Demonstrating courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude towards all stakeholders is essential.

Knowledge of computerized patient record systems and adherence to HIPAA regulations regarding patient confidentiality is required.

Requirements
U.S. Citizenship is mandatory; non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable.

All applicants selected for VA employment in a testing designated position will undergo urinalysis for illegal drug screening prior to appointment.

Selective Service Registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.

Applicants must meet physical standards for the position, including the ability to lift and push weights, and must pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution is required.

Approved schools include those accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.
